Song Royalty Split and Production Budget Sheet

Songwriter splits represent ownership of the underlying composition, which includes the lyrics and melody that generate publishing royalties. Master splits represent ownership of the actual sound recording, which determines how streaming, physical sales, and sync licensing revenues are paid out. These two sets of rights are entirely separate and can be owned by different people.

Session musicians are typically paid a flat day rate as work-for-hire and do not receive ongoing royalty splits. However, if a session musician contributes a highly distinctive part that helps write the song, you can choose to grant them a small percentage of the songwriting or master splits. Any such agreement must be clearly documented in writing before recording begins.

The industry standard is to divide splits equally among everyone in the room when the song was created, regardless of individual output. If you want to depart from this standard, you must negotiate specific percentages based on contribution size, such as giving 70% to the primary lyricist and 30% to the beat maker. Ensure these customized percentages are agreed upon and signed off before the track is sent to mixing.

You can physically register a song with a Performing Rights Organization without a signed split sheet, but doing so is highly risky. If another collaborator registers different percentages, the PRO will freeze all royalty payouts for that song until the dispute is resolved. A signed split sheet serves as the legally binding proof needed to resolve these conflicts immediately.
